It is such a tragedy when you learn that a young person was hurt at the workplace, especially after doing something he/she knew was unsafe.
The fact is that many workers knowingly take unnecessary risks every day because they fear losing their jobs. Sometimes there is expressed threats and intimidation, while others times the threats are less overt, but real just the same. They take these risks in order to sustain a livelihood for themselves and their family. The sad irony is that if they get hurt, or killed, the "livelihood" they tried to protect is suddenly taken away and the cost is overwhelming - emotionally and financially.
As parents, we are the first to tell our children to be safe - safe at school, safe on their date, safe when out with friends, and yes... safe at work. Yet, as adults, we allow ourselves to take risks - regardless of the motivating factors - and, consequently play roulette with our "family". Is that something we really want to gamble with? Of course not.
Be smart - stay safe at work. Speak truth to power and exercise your right to refuse unsafe work. It's the "family thing to do"!
